The Best Restaurants In
Downtown Salt Lake City Utah

Italian Food

Plenty of Choices

If you’re looking for the best restaurants in downtown Salt Lake City Utah, you have a lot more great choices now than people used to think. Downtown Salt Lake City has become a real food city.

You can go upscale. You can go casual. You can do a steakhouse before a game, sushi before a show, or a long Italian dinner for a special occasion. That’s what makes this downtown fun right now.

This is also a practical dining district. If you’re in town to attend a function at the Salt Palace Convention Center, an event at the Delta Center, a business trip, or it’s your first time downtown, you can find good food without driving all over the valley.

And, if you don’t mind a short Uber, a few strong nearby spots widen your options even more.

Where I Would Start First

For many people, Copper Onion is still one of the safest restaurant recommendations in downtown Salt Lake City. It’s been around since 2010.

It calls itself Salt Lake’s American brasserie. It focuses on American fare, wine, cocktails, and locally sourced ingredients. That makes it a very easy answer when someone asks me for one of the very best restaurants downtown.

It works for date night. It works for a business dinner. It works if you just want a reliable meal in the heart of town.

If Italian sounds better, Caffe Molise remains one of the classics. Caffe Molise is in downtown Salt Lake City and serves Italian food inspired by the Molise region of Italy.

It also has one of the nicest little touches downtown - the garden patio. On Friday nights it features live jazz, which gives it a little extra atmosphere without feeling stiff.

For a relaxed dinner before a show or a special occasion that is not overly formal, this is still one an excellent pick.

If you want something livelier, White Horse SLC belongs on the list. It is right on Main Street. It’s a 21-and-over establishment. After the 2025 Main Street fire, it reopened in January 2026.

That matters because a lot of people have been wondering whether it’s back. It is. White Horse SLC is a good downtown choice if you want cocktails, energy, and a dinner that feels a little more social than quiet.

Franklin Avenue is another good downtown play when you want something stylish but not stuffy. Officially it is Franklin Ave Cocktails & Kitchen but I know many people still search for Franklin Avenue.

It’s also 21 and over. The restaurant highlights groups, parties, and special events, and its menu ranges from wagyu burger and pappardelle Bolognese to a fried chicken sandwich. That makes it a very flexible place.

You can go in for drinks. You can go in for a full dinner. You can even make it your backup answer when everyone in the group wants something slightly different.

The Best Italian
Restaurants Downtown

If you’re searching for the best Italian restaurants in this part of the city, I would narrow it to two names first: Caffe Molise and Valter’s Osteria. Both are strong. They just hit differently.

Caffe Molise, mentioned previously in this article, is the more relaxed of the two. It is polished, but still feels approachable.

Valter’s Osteria is where I would point you for the bigger night out. Valter’s leans hard into hospitality, handmade pastas, family recipes, and fine dining in the heart of Salt Lake City.

The restaurant still takes reservations by phone rather than online which almost fits the old-school experience. It is also not just a local favorite.

Valter’s Osteria was named a James Beard semifinalist in 2024 for Outstanding Hospitality. If you want a true special occasion restaurant, this is one of the strongest answers in town.

It’s also an easy place to drop a bundle of cash so be prepared for that. As we experienced, it was well worth it (in our opinion).

Food and Wine

Best Picks for Sushi, Asian,
And Chinese Food

For Japanese food downtown, Takashi is still one of the names that comes up first for a reason. It sits on Market Street and serves lunch and dinner.

Post Office Place Bar sits right next door. If you want sushi before an evening downtown, Takashi is still one of the easiest high-confidence calls you can make.

If you want broader Asian flavors, Sapa is a very solid choice just south of the core. Sapa calls itself Salt Lake City’s sushi and Asian grill restaurant and focuses on Asian-fusion dishes.

It’s not right in the thick of Main Street traffic which can be a plus. Sometimes that short drive or Uber is exactly what makes for a better meal and a better night.

For Chinese and Thai food that’s easy to reach from downtown, J. Wong’s Thai & Chinese Bistro is another good option to know. It’s right in the heart of Salt Lake City on West 200 South.

This is one of those places that makes sense when you want good food, a broad menu, and something a little less formal than the steakhouse-and-cocktail crowd.

Tasty Sushi on a Board

Best Choices for Steak,
Business Dinners, and Splurges

Some people want local. Some want familiar. Downtown Salt Lake gives you both.

If you want the classic national-name steakhouse experience, Ruth’s Chris is the easy answer. Its Salt Lake City location is on West Temple.

This keeps it right in the downtown mix. If you're in town for meetings, clients, or a dressier dinner before a major event, it’s a simple, safe choice.

If you want something more local and a little more unique, I’d look hard at Urban Hill. It’s in the Post District (a little south and west of downtown) rather than right in the center of downtown.

Urban Hill features a wood-fired grill, oyster bar, curated wine program, lounge, and private dining areas. It was also recognized by City Weekly for fine dining.

Chef Nick Zocco was named a 2026 James Beard finalist for Best Chef in the Mountain region. That’s serious momentum.

Best Nearby Casual Choice

Not every dinner needs to be a production.

That’s where Desert Edge comes in. Desert Edge is in historic Trolley Square just east of downtown. It’s been an original in Salt Lake City since 1973 with casual food and handcrafted beers.

Back then, it was simply known as The Pub. Desert Edge is not trying to be the fanciest room in town.

The atmosphere in old Trolley Square is magnetic. It’s just trying to be dependable, comfortable, and fun.

Sometimes that’s exactly the right call especially before a concert or the next time you want something easy after a long day downtown.

It’s a very nostalgic place for my wife and I. We’ve been going there for a long time.

Best Restaurants Near
The Salt Palace Convention Center

If you’re staying near the Salt Palace Convention Center and don’t want to overthink it, I would start with:

  • Copper Onion
  • White Horse SLC
  • Franklin Avenue
  • Takashi
  • Caffe Molise
  • Ruth’s Chris

They’re all in the downtown restaurant zone and each gives you a different mood. Copper Onion is polished and dependable. White Horse is lively.

Franklin Avenue is stylish and flexible. Takashi covers your sushi fix. Caffe Molise is one of the downtown classics. Ruth’s Chris is the known steakhouse play.

How I Would Choose

If it’s your first time downtown, I would keep it simple. Go to Copper Onion, Caffe Molise, or White Horse SLC. Those are easy wins. You should have a good time at any of the three.

If it’s a special occasion, I would lean Valter’s Osteria first, and then Urban Hill. Then Ruth’s Chris depending on how formal and familiar you want the evening to feel.

If you want more variety in cuisine, do Takashi, Sapa, or J. Wong’s. If you want a more relaxed local hangout, do Desert Edge.

If you want cocktails plus dinner in a stylish room, think White Horse SLC or Franklin Avenue.

Final Thoughts

The best restaurants in downtown Salt Lake City Utah are not all trying to do the same thing. That’s the good news.

You have classic Italian. You have sushi. You have Chinese and Thai. You have steakhouse options. You have cocktail-driven rooms.

You have casual places that still feel worth your time. That makes downtown Salt Lake City more useful than ever for visitors, locals, convention guests, and anyone heading there for special events.

So if someone asks me for the best restaurants downtown Salt Lake City Utah, I’m not giving just one name. I’m giving a short list.

  • Copper Onion
  • Caffe Molise
  • White Horse SLC
  • Franklin Avenue
  • Valter’s Osteria
  • Takashi.

Then I’m adding:

  • Desert Edge
  • Urban Hill
  • Sapa
  • J. Wong’s if you're willing to drive just a little.

That’s a strong lineup. And it gives you plenty of good choices for this time around. And for the next one too.
