Hello, I will be with my family (kids 7, 9, 12 in age) in SLC in early July. We are from the flat east and would like to enjoy dramatic mountain scenery by car and with some modest hikes.
What would you recommend to see in 3 or 4 days? Is it worth going into the Uintas or are the Wasatch mountains sufficient?

With only 3 or 4 days, I would recommend you stay in the Wasatch Mountains and Salt Lake City area. The Wasatch Mountains are more than sufficient. They are spectacular.
I would recommend you drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon. Check out my pages on these off of my Scenic Byways page. You can find links in the Sitemap. About the time you’re visiting, the wildflowers should be fantastic at the top of Little Cottonwood at Albion Basin. That’s a nice, short hike.
There are some easy short hikes at the top … and along the way … of each of these canyons. The snowbird tram will take you to the top of the Wasatch Mountains and give you a view you’ll never forget.
I also recommend visiting the Park City area and even the Heber Valley if you have time. Park City is ½ hour up the canyon from Salt Lake City. Heber another 15 minutes.
The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway … just south of Salt Lake City … up American Fork Canyon is another fantastic scenic drive. You can access it only ½ south of Salt Lake City.
