This article is a little longer than I normally write but it is about a subject I have been learning more about recently. Having been an avid photographer throughout my life … and spending the requisite money that goes with it… I am utterly amazed at the technology now available at our fingertips.

For no additional monetary outlay whatsoever, other than what most of us are already paying for. The age of smartphones has given even the rawest novice the ability to capture stunning travel photos in ways that have never been more user-friendly.

As digital photography took over from film and slides … my, how I loved Fuji Velvia slide film … something happened that I entirely missed. My smartphone's camera replaced a whole bagful of photography gear.  

As a result, I’ve only recently started to realize how amazing our everyday smartphones are as a “pro-quality” photographic device.  As we explore scenic landscapes, vibrant city streets, and intriguing cultures, our smartphones offer photographic capabilities that rival those of a high-end camera. 

With the advent of advanced imaging technology, smartphones now enable even amateur photographers to produce breathtaking images that resonate with vivid detail and dynamic composition. Although my experience is with iPhones, you can capture equally compelling images with Android phones.

These same capabilities once required an uber-expensive camera, an equally costly lens (or three), pricey film and processing, an array of filters, and numerous other add-ons. They are now contained in the small apparatus most people keep within reach every day.

Your modern smartphone can replace all those lenses of various focal lengths that photographers used to haul around. My smartphone is actually my best friend when it comes to taking photos. I often inadvertently refer to it as my camera rather than my phone.

• Megapixels: They determine the resolution of your images. More megapixels mean sharper, more detailed photos. This is especially noticeable when you print your pictures in larger formats. Basically, the more megapixels a camera provides, the clearer your image will be when you enlarge it.

• Aperture: This is the opening through which light enters your camera. It significantly impacts the depth of field and low-light performance of your photos. A lower f-stop number means a larger aperture. This allows more light to hit the sensor - ideal in dim conditions but it also creates a softer background for portraits. A lower f-stop capability enables you to take photos in much more challenging situations.

• ISO: This setting adjusts the camera's sensitivity to light. A lower ISO is used in bright lighting to avoid overexposure. A higher ISO is beneficial in darker settings to enhance detail visibility without requiring a flash. Old-school expensive film … both roll and slide … used to come in a variety of ISO ratings that made it difficult to adjust to all lighting situations.

When photographing landscapes, the key is to convey the vastness and beauty of nature. Utilize compositional techniques like leading lines ... paths, rivers, or mountain ridges ... that guide the viewer's eye through the image.
