Ogden River Scenic Byway

The Ogden River Scenic Byway shadows the  Ogden River up the canyon bearing the same name.

From the town of Ogden, take SR-39 east through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The byway ends as it loops around scenic Pineview Reservoir.

The canyon starts off … like so many of the canyons east of the Wasatch Front … by taking you between rugged steep rock walls.

But that ruggedness soon gives way to grass-covered slopes and inviting waters. A haven for hikers and fishermen .

Some of the more popular trails include Coldwater Canyon and Wheeler Creek Canyon. Another one is Indian Trail … about 5 miles long.

Six miles up the canyon, the byway opens up into the stunning valley highlighted by Pineview Reservoir. Clear blue water. A year-round recreation destination.

The byway travels around the edge of Pineview. And takes you through the charming little towns of Huntsville and Eden.

Huntsville is the home of a Trappist Monastery. The monastery of the Holy Trinity was founded at Huntsville in 1947. The history of these Monks can be traced back to at least the third century A.D.

A popular ... and colorful ... spectacle held in the valley is the Ogden Valley Balloon & Artist Festival. Usually held each summer, it has been postponed until the summer of 2012.

Nearby, take time to visit the Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area’s North Arm viewing site.

And, of course, there are three ski resorts in this area to delight skiers and snowboarders :

  • Snowbasin
  • Powder Mountain
  • Wolf Mountain

The Ogden River Scenic Byway is only 15 miles long. Plan on an hour ... more if you want to stop and enjoy the area.
